Radar Observations of Mercury
نویسنده
چکیده
Earth-based radar observations have provided information on the equatorial topography, sul3Pace scattering properties, and rotation of Mercury. The recent observational program at Arecibo Observatory has been devoted primarily to the measurement of altimetric profiles using the delay-Doppler technique. These profiles, which were derivedfrom observations made over a 6 yr period, provide fairly extensive coverage over a restricted equatorial band. The data have suficient resolution and accuracy to permit the identijication of radar signatures for features as small as 50-km diameter craters and km high arcuate scarps. More importantly, they have been used to identify large-scale topographic features such as smooth plains subsidence zones and major highlands regions. In this sense the radar data complement spacecraft images, as quantitative altimetry from the latter is limited to shadow measurements of small, high-relief features such as crater rims. Radar data such as that obtained at Arecibo also provide most of what little information is available on the unimaged hemisphere. Measurements of radar cross section, Doppler spectrum shape, and depolarization provide information on the dielectric properties and roughness of the sul3Pace. These results can be readily compared with similar measurements for other planets.

Comparison of areas in shadow from imaging and altimetry in the north polar region of Mercury and implications for polar ice deposits.
Earth-based radar observations and results from the MESSENGER mission have provided strong evidence that permanently shadowed regions near Mercury's poles host deposits of water ice. MESSENGER's complete orbital image and topographic datasets enable Mercury's surface to be observed and modeled under an extensive range of illumination conditions. The shadowed regions of Mercury's north polar reg...
متن کاملA Review of the Three-dimensional Field Displacement Retrieval Methods Using Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar Observations (InSAR) With Emphasis on the Precision of Each of these Methods
Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (InSAR) technology provides a useful tool for quantitatively measuring the deformation of the earth, influenced by natural factors (earthquake, subsidence, and landslide) and human factors (construction of structures, drilling, and the overexploitation of underground water aquifers). In this context, time-series analysis of radar images allows the monito...
متن کاملV Session: RADAR OBSERVATIONS OF THE PLANETS A Review of Radar Studies of Planetary Surfaces
In recent years, radar has been used to study the surfaces of the planets Mercury, Venus, Mars , and Jupiter. In the case of Venus, attenuation in the planetary atmosphere at short wavelengths has also been reported. For Mercury and Venus , where the diurnal rotation is difficult to establish by other means, radar has provided a clear-cut determination of the sidereal periods as 59 and 247 days...
متن کاملNear-Surface Temperatures on Mercury and the Moonand the Stability of Polar Ice Deposits
In order to assess the thermal stability of polar ice deposits, we present model calculated temperatures of flat surfaces and surfaces within bowl-shaped and flat-floored polar impact craters on Mercury and the Moon. Our model includes appropriate insolation cycles, realistic crater shapes, multiple scattering of sunlight and infrared radiation, and depthand temperature-dependent regolith therm...
متن کامل35. Advances in Planetary Radar Astronomy
During an era when observations from spacecraft have produced the great majority of new information about the solar system, observations of solar-system bodies from the Earth, using high-powered radar systems, have produced some remarkable results. These include the discovery of condensed volatiles, most likely water ice, at the poles of Mercury; the high-resolution imaging of main-belt and nea...
